Big frame rates for FSX on it's own hard drive

Here's how I dealt with slow frame rates on FSX. I added another internal hard drive, in this case a WD 300 gig 10k rpm velociraptor, & put nothing but FSX and some FSX add-ons on it, doing a FRESH INSTALL of these. You MUST do a fresh install, not a copy-over for this to work well. This gets FSX in it's own place away from all the Windows system mud that remains on the other HD. When I fired it up I had a hard time believing the increase in performance. I'm seeing double, triple, sometimes even quadruple the frame rates depending on factors. In this video the graphic settings are at default with some things increased. Anisotropic filtering with antialiasing, aircraft global settings at ultra high, all shadows, scenery complexity at extremely dense, autogen at zero as I usually run it, because I don't like autogen. I took this method to Delta Virtual Airlines, and asked pilots to try it. Some who did had success with it, and it looked like the faster the hard drive... the more success they had. My system is custom built & over a year old: Asus P5N32 SLI SE Deluxe Mobo, Intel core 2 duo E6600 2.4 ghz cpu running at 2.4 ghz, 650 W. pwr. supply, single ATI Radeon X1900XT 512 Mb video card, Creative XB-XFI sound card, and the two WD hard drives, both 10k rpm.

Background: In the original "Compressing Your Life Away" video John talked about (amongst other things) the frustrations he has with the vast amount of hard drive space taken up by raw video footage, and the wasted time he spends compressing the footage to save a bit of space. Apologies John, this video fails to answer many of the points you raised in your video so just for you (I suspect very few other people will read it) a more thorough text response is below. Unabridged answer 1. I have my YouTube settings set to default to always watch 'High Quality' videos when available 2. When I used to upload videos onto my PC 4GB in AVI. format would equal approximately 20 minutes of footage 3. When the raw footage has been edited I always export a high quality version of the finished video and then delete the raw footage. 4. The exported high quality version seems to have the same GB:Minute ratio 5. This means that editing the raw footage saves me very little hard drive space. 6. Unfortunately when editing I use about 95% of the footage filmed (excluding this video!) because when filming Cat & Funny videos we have only ever done 2 takes once. 1990 IBM Personal System/2 Model 30 286

The model 30 286 was on the low end of IBM's PS/2 lineup, with a 10 MHz 80286 processor, 1 megabyte of RAM (expandable to 4 MB), the standard ISA bus (not Microchannel), a 20 MB hard drive, and built-in VGA graphics. DOS runs fine, but Windows 3.11 is quite sluggish due to the slow hard drive and lack of memory. I also show how I replaced the original Dallas DS1287 clock/battery chip with a DS12887, so now it won't keep forgetting the time and date every time I turn it off. The DS1287 is long out of production, and the DS12887 is the replacement, which should work fine in most computers. You can also literally hack into the DS1287 chip, disconnect its dead internal battery, and install an external battery to get it working again -- see uxwbill's video for information and instructions: www.youtube.com
